Just imagine if Blessed Trinity’s Andrew Smith had focused solely on track all four years of high school.

Smith played freshman football, and three years of basketball before focusing on track exclusively for his senior season. A hurdling standout at BT and a three-time region finalist, Smith has his sights set on the Class-AA state meet in 2010.

“He’s done hurdles and sprints all fall and winter, so this should be a really good season for him,” said Gus Smith, Andrew’s father and community coach at BT.

“He has tremendous focus and determination. This last year, he’s been out there on the track just going over hurdles hundreds and hundreds of times.”

Smith has started his senior year on the right foot. He won the 300-meter hurdles event on Feb. 24 against Class-AAAAA foe Union Grove. Smith added a victory in the high hurdles at the Archbishop’s Relays at St. Pius X on Feb. 27, and he anchored the victorious 110-meter high hurdle shuttle relay team at the Riverwood Big Peach Relays over the weekend.

Off the track, Smith is a BT Student Ambassador with a grade point average just shy of 4.0. He is also an accomplished concert pianist, and has gained early acceptance in the Honors Program at the University of Georgia.

“He’s the ideal son,” said Gus. “A wholesome, well-rounded student-athlete.”
