In the pet rescue community, spring and fall are known as kitten season because so many litters during these times.

Those spring newborns are now kittens that need homes, according to Deborah Smith-Callahan, the cat adoptions coordinator for Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, a volunteer-based organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in north Georgia.

The nonprofit organization is holding a kitten adoption event at the PETCO at 10980 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’ll have all colors, types, hair lengths and personalities,” Ms. Smith-Callahan said. “We’ll have mellow kittens and ones that want to run around and play.”

Most of the adoptable cats will be between the ages of eight and 12 weeks, but older kittens and adult cats will be available for adoption, as well.

“Any cat is difficult to adopt out,” Ms. Smith-Callahan said. “The rates are low, with 10 percent of cats in shelters being adopted, and the rest are euthanized.”

Ms. Smith-Callahan said many pet owners do not spay or neuter their cats, creating an abundance of homeless cats.

“One problem is that people find it more acceptable to see cats wandering the street,” she said. “One un-spayed female can have two litters a year, which adds up.”

The organization is spaying and neutering all of the adoptable cats and kittens, as well as providing some vaccinations and implanting microchips.

“We’re trying to stop the vicious cycle,” Ms. Smith-Callahan said.
